About

Parent Organization: University of Minnesota - Twin Cities

Design U is an undergraduate student group founded with the intent of providing students with the opportunity to engage in fast-paced, interdisciplinary, hands-on design work. Unlike other existing design groups, its operation and culture is modeled after a real product design firm. Our members are to be the University's brightest future engineers, designers, and business students coming together to meet the demand of local businesses and nonprofits for quality creative work. In multi-faceted teams, the members of Design U enrich each other's education through collaborative work and engage industry on its own turf. At its core, Design U is to serve as an accelerator for design thinking and application in the U of M community.

Please list your principal activities, events, or programs.

Foremost, Design U is to operate around hands-on case work. In interdisciplinary teams, members will tackle real-world challenges provided by regional businesses. In Design U, members will carry out the entire product design process as performed in industry - this entails product conceptualization, brand analysis, fiscal considerations, prototyping, fabrication and presentation to clients. In addition to case work, members will engage in contract work. Members will be connected with various companies to complete \free-lance\" contracts such as CAD renderings or logo design. Additionally, Design U will partner with other student groups to sponsor design challenges.

How do your activities benefit the University community?

Design U is poised to grant students, specifically engineers, with tremendous benefits. Firstly, by taking on case-work in Design U, students will attain experience working collaboratively with team members of diverse backgrounds and experiences (see more on team structure in bylaws). Additionally, in completing projects, students will learn to meet tangible deadlines and communicate with real businesses. Further, Design U will invite faculty members and industry mentors to assist with projects, giving members a unique opportunity to learn valuable industry skills. Lastly, Design U will work to apply design thinking to help solve University problems and sponsor innovation in the community.

How can someone get involved with your group? For example, do you have a consistent meeting time, location? Do they need to fill out a membership application? Who should they contact for more information?

We will have weekly meetings, alternating between individual team meetings and all member meetings (donned the \Creative Assembly\"). In order to become involved, students must fill out an online application on the Design U webpage and follow up with the current Communications Director. These processes are outlined more specifically in the bylaws and constitution of the group.
