University of Minnesota Cyber Defense Team is a cybersecurity student organization that promotes cybersecurity skills along with workshops, competitions, presentations, and social gatherings. Within Cyber Defense Team will be a team of 12 which will qualify and compete in the annual regional and national Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (CCDC).

Plumb Bob is an honorary leadership society that has been at UMN since 1914. Our main objective is to plan, organize, and run each spring's CSE Week. During this time, there are many CSE celebratory events and other student group participants that Plumb Bob oversees. Moreover, Plumb Bob also hosts an event in the fall to promote student interaction with the many aspects of CSE and college academics. We meet weekly during the fall semester and weekly during the spring semester. Plumb Bob welcomes recruits and new members all year-long.

We focus on cleaning up Dinkytown by picking up litter on the weekends. In addition, we will attempt to add more stop signs, street lights and other safety features. Our goal is to make Dinkytown a safer and cleaner environment for students and the community.

Students in the University of Minnesota dance program created a student group called, Dance Production. The goal is to plan, create, and facilitate a one-day show that displays the many avenues of art that is present both on campus and in the twin cities. This spring semester, Dance Production is facilitating a multidisciplinary arts festival, which has been titled, Make: Magnify. This festival, scheduled for April 13, 2024, includes both student and community artists. These artists can be dancers, musicians, sculptors, painters, lighting designers, collagists, etc. For the festival, Dance Production is also planning on working with ASL interpreters, stage managers, and lighting designers to not only create a successful arts festival but to allow students the chances of gaining experience in working behind the scenes of an arts show as well.

The New Music Ensemble is a student-led project at the University of Minnesota. Our goal is to provide students the opportunity to perform contemporary art music from the 20th and 21st centuries. In one part, the NME’s programming is curated from performer interests, balanced with the practice of common styles and techniques. In addition, the NME aims to program new works written by living composers, including our own composition studios and the established works from both U.S. and international composers.

Aikido is a Japanese martial art with roots in Ju Jitsu. Using body positioning and dynamic motion, an attacker’s energy is redirected into a throw, joint lock, or pin. Emphasis is placed upon the harmonization between attacker and defender to diffuse a conflict peacefully.

Handball is a sport which promotes the idea of being quick on your feet, reacting to your opponent in a timely manner, and keeping your concentration. These are skills that we are always trying to improve on when we play. Whether it's positioning your feet in just the right place to step into a shot, or coming up with a strategy in the middle of a rally, we try to stay focused on everything going on in the court. Handball also has a very niche, but equally competitive community that strives to improve and hand craft amazing matches.

About:
We teach Traditional Japanese Karate as refined by Sensei Nishiyama, along with Shotoryu Goshinjutsu, the Self Defense system based on the Kata of Shotokan developed by our instructor, David Gimberline. Training in the Shotokan Karate Club allows students to receive the benefits of physical fitness, mental discipline, self-defense, and the challenge of collegiate competition.

How to Get Involved:
Join us in our class every Monday and Wednesday, 5-7 p.m. at Recreation and Wellness Center MP2 of University of Minnesota Twin Cities. All levels are welcome to attend.
